Their Story

Sergeant Nicholas Alan Robertson was born in Old Town, Maine. He served as a Special Forces soldier with the U.S. Army's Company B, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His service included deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom across multiple theaters, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

In early April 2008, Robertson was operating in Afghanistan. According to military records, he was involved in a hostile incident that resulted in severe wounds. The specific details of the engagement, including its location and nature, were not publicly detailed in initial casualty reports.

Following the incident, Robertson was evacuated from Afghanistan for advanced medical care. He was transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a major U.S. military treatment facility for wounded personnel from combat zones.

Sergeant Robertson died of his wounds at Landstuhl on April 3, 2008. He was 27 years old. The Army classified his death as hostile. His death was recorded during a period of intensified conflict in Afghanistan, several years before the official conclusion of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2014.

Robertson's awards and decorations reportedly included the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal, among others. He is memorialized on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at Fort Bragg and at the Afghanistan War memorial in his home state of Maine.

His death was one of over 2,300 U.S. military fatalities in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Each loss represented a distinct individual story of service, ending in the enduring grief of families and communities.
