Staff Sergeant Kevin Casey Roberts, 25, of Farmington, New Mexico, was a U.S. Army infantryman assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky

Their Story

Kevin Casey Roberts was killed in action on May 7, 2008, in the Saberi District of Afghanistan's Khost province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. The Saberi District, near the border with Pakistan, was a known area of insurgent activity during that period of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Roberts was a non-commissioned officer in the storied 506th Infantry Regiment. He was deployed as part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division, a unit with a long history of combat operations. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

His death occurred during the mid-phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, a period marked by a significant U.S. troop surge and intensified combat in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. The conflict, which began in October 2001, would continue for another six years after his death.

Roberts was from Farmington, New Mexico. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Defense Casualty Analysis System. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
