Their Story

Sergeant First Class Edgar Nathaniel Roberts Jr. was a U.S. Army soldier assigned to the Warrior Transition Brigade at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was one of the thousands of American service members deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.

According to the Department of Defense, Roberts died on August 17, 2010, at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The official casualty announcement listed his home of record as Hinesville, Georgia, and his cause of death as hostile action.

His assignment to the Warrior Transition Brigade indicates he was receiving care for wounds, injuries, or illness incurred in the line of duty. The brigade was established to provide command and support for soldiers undergoing complex medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Roberts's death, occurring at a stateside medical facility, underscores the prolonged and distant impact of combat injuries. He was 39 years old at the time of his passing.

His death was recorded among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The conflict formally concluded with the end of the NATO combat mission in December 2014.
