Their Story
Lance Cpl. Cody Allen Roberts was a 22-year-old Marine from Boise, Idaho, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.
Roberts died on August 31, 2010, at Camp Dwyer, a forward operating base in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed while supporting combat operations. Camp Dwyer served as a major hub for U.S. and coalition forces in Helmand, a province that saw intense fighting during the 2010 troop surge.
His death occurred during a period of heightened violence. In August 2010, the International Security Assistance Force reported that insurgent attacks in Helmand had increased significantly compared to the previous year. The Marine battalion to which Roberts belonged was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in the volatile region.
Roberts was one of at least 55 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during August 2010, according to casualty records. Operation Enduring Freedom, which began in October 2001, concluded in December 2014. Roberts did not come home from his deployment.
