Their Story
Jeffrey Gordon Roberson was a 22-year-old soldier from the high desert community of Phelan, California. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army's 554th Military Police Company, a unit stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany, which deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
His unit's mission in Afghanistan included training Afghan police forces and conducting security operations. In late November 2006, Cpl. Roberson was operating in Logar province, a region south of Kabul known for insurgent activity.
On November 28, 2006, the vehicle he was traveling in was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) near the village of Baraki Barak in Logar. The attack was reported by the U.S. Department of Defense and contemporary news accounts.
Roberson was one of several U.S. service members killed by IEDs in Afghanistan that month. His death occurred during a period of intensified combat as Taliban and other insurgent groups increased their use of roadside bombs.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States and interred at Riverside National Cemetery in California.
The war in Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom, continued for eight more years after his death, concluding in December 2014.
