Their Story
Lance Corporal Tyler Allan Roads was a rifleman with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 7 deployed to southern Afghanistan. His unit operated in Helmand province, a center of Taliban insurgency and a focal point for the U.S. troop surge announced in late 2009.
In July 2010, coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive, Operation New Dawn, aimed at clearing insurgent strongholds in Helmand's Marjah and Sangin districts. The operation involved sustained, close-quarters combat in difficult terrain of farmland and irrigation canals.
Roads was killed during a combat patrol in Helmand province on July 10, 2010. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while supporting combat operations. No further specifics regarding the engagement were released in initial reports.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting for the 2nd Marine Division. The 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines sustained multiple casualties that summer during its deployment in support of what was then called Operation Enduring Freedom.
Roads was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He was survived by his parents and is memorialized on the Wall of the Fallen at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and by a veterans' memorial in his hometown of Burney, California.
