Daquane Demetris Rivers was a 21-year-old soldier from Marianna, a small city in the Florida Panhandle. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, part of the 172nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Grafenwoehr, Germany. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On March 14, 2012, Rivers was stationed at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E in Paktika province, southeastern Afghanistan. The base, near the border with Pakistan, was a frequent target for insurgent attacks, including rocket and mortar fire.
