Rivera, Edwin
Staff Sergeant Edwin Rivera, 28, of Waterford, Connecticut, served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment, Connecticut Army National Guard. He died on May 25, 2010, from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Edwin Rivera was a soldier with the Connecticut Army National Guard's Company A, 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
On May 20, 2010, Rivera was on patrol in the Arghandab District of Kandahar province, a region of intense insurgent activity. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was struck by an improvised explosive device. Rivera was critically wounded in the blast.
He was evacuated from Afghanistan for emergency medical treatment. Rivera was transported to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, a major military trauma center. He died there on May 25, 2010, from the wounds he sustained in the hostile attack five days prior.
Rivera was 28 years old. A resident of Waterford, Connecticut, he was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. The conflict concluded in December 2014, though U.S. military operations in Afghanistan continued under different names.
