Sgt. Joshua James Rimer, 24, of Rochester, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Army engineer serving with the 4th Engineer Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado. He died on July 22, 2009, in Zabul province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Joshua James Rimer was a sergeant in the U.S. Army's 4th Engineer Battalion, part of the 4th Infantry Division based at Fort Carson, Colorado. The battalion deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.

In the summer of 2009, Sgt. Rimer was operating in Zabul province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan bordering Pakistan. Insurgent activity in the area was frequent, involving roadside bombs, small-arms fire, and complex attacks on coalition and Afghan forces.

On July 22, 2009, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that Sgt. Rimer died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Zabul province. Official reports listed his cause of death as hostile fire, though the specific details of the engagement were not publicly disclosed in initial releases.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. He was 24 years old.

Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan formally concluded in December 2014, transitioning to the follow-on mission Operation Freedom's Sentinel. Sgt. Rimer's death occurred in the eighth year of the conflict, a period marked by a significant U.S. troop surge aimed at countering a resilient insurgency.

He is remembered on memorials honoring service members from Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where he was from. The U.S. Army posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals for his service and sacrifice.
