Micheal Bernard Riley was a 32-year-old Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. Riley was originally from Heilbronn, Germany.
On June 25, 2019, Riley died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident while conducting combat operations in Shinia Village, located in the Chora District of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. The operation was part of the U.S. military's train, advise, and assist mission in the region.
Riley's death occurred under Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission involved counter-terrorism operations and support for Afghan National Defense and Security Forces against insurgent groups, including the Taliban.
Following his death, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the casualty. Riley was posthumously promoted from Sergeant First Class to Master Sergeant. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military records.
