Sergeant Joseph Alvin Richardson was a soldier in the United States Army's 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Fort Riley, Kansas. His unit, known as the 'Black Lions,' deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001.
On November 16, 2012, Richardson was killed in Zerok, a district in Afghanistan's Paktika province. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire. He was 23 years old.
Richardson was from Booneville, Arkansas. According to public records and casualty announcements, he had previously served on deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
His death occurred during the latter years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a period marked by a continued insurgency and combat operations in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. The conflict formally concluded in December 2014.
Sergeant Richardson was one of more than 2,300 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the operation. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Riley and is listed on the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
