Their Story
Jonathan Jerome Richardson was born in Bald Knob, Arkansas, a small city north of Little Rock. He joined the United States Army and became an infantryman, rising to the rank of sergeant. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, is part of the 101st Airborne Division and has a storied history dating to World War II.
Sgt. Richardson deployed multiple times during his service. Before his final assignment in Afghanistan, he had served on missions in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa as part of broader U.S. military operations.
In 2010, Richardson was deployed to eastern Afghanistan with his unit, which operated out of Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost Province. The region was a known insurgent stronghold near the border with Pakistan, and the base was a frequent target of rocket and mortar attacks.
On March 9, 2010, FOB Salerno came under hostile fire. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Sgt. Richardson was killed by indirect fire, a term typically describing rocket or mortar attacks. He was 24 years old.
His death was recorded among the 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, a conflict that began in October 2001. The operation concluded in December 2014, though U.S. military involvement continued under other names.
Sgt. Richardson was survived by his family in Arkansas. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls and by veterans' organizations associated with the 101st Airborne Division.
