Private First Class Jeffrey Leon Rice, 24, of Troy, Ohio, served with the U.S. Army's 584th Engineer Company, 20th Engineer Battalion, based at Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed in action on July 19, 2012, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Private First Class Jeffrey Leon Rice was a combat engineer deployed to southern Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to the 584th Engineer Company, part of the 20th Engineer Battalion, a unit specializing in route clearance and the detection of improvised explosive devices.
Rice died on July 19, 2012, in Kandahar province, a region that saw intense fighting during the U.S. troop surge. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed by an enemy improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol.
His unit, the 20th Engineer Battalion, was based at Fort Hood, Texas, and deployed to Afghanistan in early 2012. The battalion's mission often involved high-risk operations to clear roads and pathways of explosives, a critical task for the safety of other coalition and Afghan forces.
Rice was from Troy, Ohio, a city in Miami County. Local news reports noted his death was met with grief in his hometown, where he was remembered by former teachers and community members.
His death occurred as the U.S. was drawing down forces following the surge, but combat operations, particularly in Kandahar, remained persistent. The war in Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom, would continue for another two and a half years.
Jeffrey Leon Rice was 24 years old. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on remembrances for fallen soldiers from Ohio.
