Their Story

Private First Class Willington Mitchell Rhoads was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 173rd Brigade Support Battalion, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. His unit was based at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy, and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.

By July 2008, the conflict had entered a phase of intensified violence. The Taliban insurgency had regrouped and was employing increasingly sophisticated tactics, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct attacks on coalition bases. Casualty figures for U.S. and allied forces were rising steadily compared to earlier years of the war.

PFC Rhoads was killed on July 16, 2008, at Bagram Airfield, a major U.S. and coalition base north of Kabul in Parwan province. The Department of Defense announced his death four days later, on July 20. The official release stated he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire.

His death occurred during a period of significant combat operations for the 173rd Airborne Brigade in eastern Afghanistan. The brigade was engaged in counter-insurgency efforts across rugged provinces, where forward operating bases and larger hubs like Bagram were frequent targets for insurgent attacks.

Rhoads was 23 years old. A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, he is memorialized on the state's veterans memorial wall and in the U.S. Army's official casualty rolls. His service placed him within a support battalion, a unit critical to sustaining frontline troops with logistics, maintenance, and medical services.

The war in Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom, formally concluded for U.S. combat troops in December 2014. Rhoads's death in 2008 is documented among the more than 2,400 American service members who lost their lives during that phase of the conflict.
