U.S. Army Sergeant Jose Joel Reyes, 24, of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, was killed in Ghazni, Afghanistan on July 18, 2012 while serving with the 110th Transportation Company.
Their Story
Jose Joel Reyes was a 24-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. He served with the 110th Transportation Company, 548th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 18, 2012, Sergeant Reyes was killed in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed on that date in Ghazni; the other was Specialist Darrion T. Hicks.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission evolved from counter-terrorism to a broader counter-insurgency and training role. The conflict resulted in over 2,300 U.S. military fatalities by its formal conclusion in December 2014.
Reyes's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Associated Press and military publications. He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Puerto Rico National Cemetery in Bayamón.
