Marc Allen Retmier was a 19-year-old Hospitalman from Hemet, California. He was assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 18, 2008, Retmier was killed by enemy small-arms fire in Zerok, a village in Afghanistan's Paktika province. He was part of a unit operating in a region known for insurgent activity along the border with Pakistan.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict involved coalition forces and the Afghan government fighting Taliban insurgents and other militant groups.
The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals for his service.
Retmier is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Riverside National Cemetery in California. His name is also inscribed on Panel 55W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Ontario, California.
