Reinhard, Kevin James
Kevin James Reinhard, a 25-year-old U.S. Marine Corporal from Colonia, New Jersey, was killed in action on January 19, 2012, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Corporal Kevin James Reinhard was a Marine assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363 (HMH-363), known as the 'Red Lions,' part of Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. He was based at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii. The 25-year-old was a native of Colonia, New Jersey.
On January 19, 2012, Reinhard died in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed while conducting combat operations. He was one of two Marines from his squadron to die that day in separate incidents in Helmand.
Reinhard's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a surge of U.S. forces deployed in 2009-2010 focused on counterinsurgency in provinces like Helmand. The mission for Marine helicopter squadrons like HMH-363 often involved troop transport, resupply, and medical evacuation in support of these ground operations.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the loss. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was reportedly held in Hawaii. The deaths of Reinhard and his fellow Marine from HMH-363, Lance Corporal Kenneth A. Corzine, were noted in local and military news reports at the time.
Corporal Reinhard's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is listed on online memorials for fallen service members. His squadron, HMH-363, continues to honor its fallen Marines.
