U.S. Army Specialist Jesse David Reed, 26, of Orefield, Pennsylvania, died on July 14, 2010, in Lagman, Afghanistan, while serving with the 618th Engineer Company.
Their Story
Jesse David Reed was a 26-year-old soldier from Orefield, Pennsylvania. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 618th Engineer Company, 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat Airborne), part of the 20th Engineer Brigade.
On July 14, 2010, Specialist Reed was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Lagman district of Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was reportedly part of a route clearance patrol, a mission tasked with finding and neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other threats along roadways.
Reed's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense counterinsurgency operations and a significant troop surge aimed at stabilizing the country.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his casualty. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His funeral was held in his hometown of Orefield.
Specialist Reed is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Lehigh County Courthouse in Pennsylvania. His name is also inscribed on Panel 10W, Line 127 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
