Their Story
Staff Sergeant Jerry Don Reed II was a 30-year-old infantryman from Russellville, Arkansas. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, part of the 172nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Grafenwoehr, Germany. According to the U.S. Army, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On February 16, 2012, Reed was killed by enemy indirect fire while inside the perimeter of Forward Operating Base Sharana in eastern Afghanistan's Paktika Province. The base, a major logistical hub for U.S. and coalition forces in the region, came under attack from insurgent mortar or rocket fire. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the incident.
Reed's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces. Paktika Province, bordering Pakistan, was a known area of insurgent activity.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the casualties from the attack. Reed's body was returned to the United States. Public records indicate memorials were held in both Arkansas and at his unit's home station in Germany.
Staff Sergeant Reed was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Russellville Veterans Memorial and on online veterans' remembrance pages maintained by the Army.
