Raymundo, Mariano Martin
Private First Class Mariano Martin Raymundo, 21, of Houston, Texas, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in action on June 1, 2013, in Sharan, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Mariano Martin Raymundo was a 21-year-old soldier from Houston, Texas. He served as a Private First Class with Company B, 210th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit was part of the U.S. Army's logistical support network.
On June 1, 2013, Raymundo died in Sharan, the capital of Paktika Province in eastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small arms fire. The area was a known insurgent stronghold near the Pakistan border.
Raymundo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the mission focused on counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces as part of a planned transition.
The Pentagon announced his death in a press release. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. Raymundo was buried with military honors.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum and is listed on the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He is remembered by his unit and family as a dedicated soldier.
