U.S. Army Specialist Bryn Todd Raver, 20, of Harrison, Arkansas, was killed in action on August 28, 2010, in Chaparhar District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Bryn Todd Raver was a 20-year-old soldier from Harrison, Arkansas. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (TF Bastogne), part of Combined Joint Task Force-101.

On August 28, 2010, Raver was killed in Chaparhar District, Nangarhar Province, eastern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. According to contemporaneous reporting, his death occurred during a patrol when his unit was struck by an improvised explosive device.

Raver's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a troop surge was ordered, and 2010 became the deadliest year of the war for U.S. and coalition forces, with intense fighting in eastern provinces like Nangarhar.

His body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held in Harrison. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported on the service, noting his family's grief and his posthumous receipt of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Specialist Raver is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Boone County Courthouse in Harrison. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
