U.S. Army Specialist Bradley David Rappuhn, 24, of Grand Ledge, Michigan, was killed in action on August 8, 2010, in Zhari district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Bradley David Rappuhn was a 24-year-old soldier from Grand Ledge, Michigan. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite airborne infantry unit based at Fort Benning, Georgia.
On August 8, 2010, Specialist Rappuhn was killed by enemy small arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Zhari district of Kandahar province. The district, a known Taliban stronghold west of Kandahar city, was a focal point for U.S. and allied operations that summer.
Rappuhn's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a major troop surge, conducting intensive counterinsurgency operations in southern Afghanistan to disrupt Taliban networks.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his casualty. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His body was returned to Michigan, where he was buried with military honors in Deepdale Memorial Park in Lansing.
Sergeant Rappuhn is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Michigan State Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 75th Ranger Regiment, continues to recognize the service and sacrifice of its fallen soldiers.
