Their Story
Robert Theodore Rapp was a 22-year-old soldier from Sonora, California. He served as a sergeant with Company D, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On March 3, 2008, Sergeant Rapp was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in Sabari District, Khost Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Rapp died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Sabari District was a known insurgent stronghold in eastern Afghanistan, where U.S. and allied forces conducted frequent counterinsurgency operations.
His body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was reportedly held in his hometown of Sonora, California, according to local media coverage at the time.
Sergeant Rapp was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.
