Lance Corporal Daniel Gabriel Raney, 21, of Pleasant View, Tennessee, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on July 9, 2010.
Their Story
Daniel Gabriel Raney was from Pleasant View, Tennessee. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. According to Marine Corps records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On July 9, 2010, Raney died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense casualty announcement stated he died while supporting combat operations. No further specifics about the engagement were released.
Raney's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, Helmand province was a major center of conflict, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.
Following his death, Raney's body was returned to Tennessee. A funeral service was held at Pleasant View United Methodist Church, and he was buried with military honors at Pleasant View Cemetery. Local news reported that hundreds of community members lined the procession route.
Lance Corporal Raney was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his battalion. His name is inscribed on Panel 7W, Line 93 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
