Their Story
Joel Alvarez Ramirez was a 22-year-old soldier from Waxahachie, Texas. He served as a Specialist with Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
Ramirez was killed on April 16, 2011, in the village of Ahmid-Khan, located in the volatile Kunar province of eastern Afghanistan. A U.S. military statement reported that he died from wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the mountainous eastern provinces bordering Pakistan.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. Local news in Texas reported on memorial services held in his hometown of Waxahachie.
