Their Story

Staff Sgt. Patrick Howard Quinn was a soldier assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. The 26-year-old was a native of Quarryville, Pennsylvania. The 10th Special Forces Group's area of operations historically included Europe and Africa, but its soldiers were regularly deployed to Afghanistan.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Quinn died on October 13, 2013, in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. The incident occurred in the mountainous eastern province bordering Pakistan, a region known for insurgent activity.

Quinn's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and stability operation.

Following the announcement of his death, Quinn was remembered by his unit and community. The 10th Special Forces Group stated he was a valued team member. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

Quinn's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Grove in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
