Petty Officer Second Class Qi Xin, 25, of Cordova, Tennessee, died on January 23, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while serving with the U.S. Navy Reserve during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Petty Officer Second Class Qi Xin was a 25-year-old sailor from Cordova, Tennessee, serving with the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was assigned to the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan (4th LAR, MEB-A), a unit that deployed to Afghanistan in 2009.
On January 23, 2010, Qi was killed by hostile fire in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died while supporting combat operations in the volatile region, a center of Taliban insurgency and a focus of the U.S. military surge at the time.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a major troop increase underway to counter a resilient Taliban insurgency, particularly in provinces like Helmand.
The Navy confirmed Qi's death the following day. He was one of at least seven U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during that week, according to contemporaneous news reports. His death was noted in local Tennessee media, which identified him as a native of the Memphis area.
Qi Xin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the website of the Navy Casualty office. He was one of 2356 American service members killed during Operation Enduring Freedom.
