Pyron, Michael Wayne
U.S. Army Specialist Michael Wayne Pyron, 30, of Hopewell, Virginia, was killed in action on January 10, 2012, in Bagram, Afghanistan, while serving with the 580th Signal Company.
Their Story
Michael Wayne Pyron was a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to the 580th Signal Company, 25th Signal Battalion, 160th Signal Brigade. The unit, based out of Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, provided critical communications support for operations across the U.S. Central Command area, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Pyron died on January 10, 2012, at Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed during an indirect fire attack, a term for incoming rocket or mortar fire targeting the installation. No other service members were reported killed in the same incident.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2012, the U.S. had begun drawing down forces following a surge, but insurgent attacks on major bases like Bagram remained frequent. Pyron was one of 2,356 American service members who died during the operation.
The Army posthumously awarded Pyron the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held in his hometown of Hopewell, Virginia.
Specialist Pyron is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond and is listed on the Pentagon's memorial for Operation Enduring Freedom casualties. His unit continued its signal support mission for the duration of the conflict.
