Corporal Lucas Todd Pyeatt, 24, of West Chester, Ohio, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on February 5, 2011.

Their Story

Corporal Lucas Todd Pyeatt was a 24-year-old Marine from West Chester, Ohio. He served as a radio operator with the 2nd Radio Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. According to the Department of Defense, he was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On February 5, 2011, Pyeatt died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Pentagon listed the cause as hostile action. He was reportedly on a foot patrol when an improvised explosive device detonated.

Pyeatt's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production. In late 2010 and early 2011, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in a major campaign to secure population centers in the province, including around Marjah and Sangin.

The Department of Defense announced his death on February 7, 2011. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on March 4, 2011.

Corporal Pyeatt was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse and on the 'Faces of the Fallen' memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
