Their Story
David Tyler Proctor was a 26-year-old soldier from Greensboro, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Specialist Proctor died on March 13, 2013, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in the Zharay district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on February 28, 2013.
Proctor was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Zharay district, where he was wounded, was a known insurgent stronghold in Kandahar province, a region that saw intense combat operations throughout the conflict.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local media in North Carolina. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals for his service and sacrifice.
Specialist Proctor is remembered on memorials for soldiers from North Carolina and among the 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. His name is inscribed on the Forsyth County Veterans Memorial in Winston-Salem.
