Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Joseph Price, 27, of Holland, Michigan, was a U.S. Marine killed in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, on July 29, 2012, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Daniel Joseph Price was a 27-year-old U.S. Marine from Holland, Michigan. He served as a Gunnery Sergeant with the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Pendleton, California. According to Marine Corps records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Price died on July 29, 2012, in the Badghis Province of northwestern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was killed by hostile fire. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press noted that a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest near a joint U.S.-Afghan patrol in the province's Murghab district on that date, killing three coalition service members.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on combating al-Qaeda and the Taliban. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and NATO forces engaged in counterinsurgency and training missions.
Price's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. The city of Holland, Michigan, held a memorial service, and local news outlets reported on the community's mourning for the fallen Marine.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Michigan's Veterans Memorial Park and listed on the Pentagon's casualty rolls. Price was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
