Their Story
Joseph Thomas Prentler was a 20-year-old specialist from Fenwick, Michigan. He served with Company G, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany, as part of the U.S. Army.
On October 4, 2010, Prentler died in Mama Kariz, a village in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. According to contemporaneous reporting, he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol.
Prentler's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by a surge of U.S. forces, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in provinces like Kandahar.
His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Fenwick, Michigan, where he was remembered by family, friends, and members of his community.
Specialist Prentler was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Michigan's Veterans Memorial Park in Grand Rapids.
