Dennis Joseph Pratt was a 34-year-old specialist from Duncan, Oklahoma, serving with the U.S. Army's 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On July 20, 2009, Specialist Pratt was killed in the Maydan Shahr District of Wardak Province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile fire. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the same incident.
Pratt died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and intense fighting in provinces like Wardak, south of Kabul, as part of counterinsurgency operations.
