Powell, Joshua David
U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua David Powell, 28, of Quitman, Texas, was killed in a hostile incident in Alingar, Alingar District, Afghanistan, on June 4, 2011.
Their Story
Joshua David Powell was a 28-year-old sergeant from Quitman, Texas. He served with the 164th Military Police Company, 793rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On June 4, 2011, Sergeant Powell was killed in Alingar District, Laghman Province, eastern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile fire. A contemporaneous report from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) noted an insurgent attack in the province that day, though it did not specify his incident.
Powell's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the conflict was in a period of intense counterinsurgency operations and a troop surge, with eastern provinces like Laghman being significant areas of engagement against Taliban and other insurgent forces.
His death was reported by several U.S. media outlets, including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which noted his Texas hometown. The Department of Defense casualty release was the primary official confirmation. He was one of 58 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in June 2011.
Sergeant Powell is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Pentagon and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name appears on the roster of fallen soldiers from the 164th Military Police Company.
