U.S. Army Specialist Dennis Cullen Poulin, 26, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, died on March 31, 2011, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.

Their Story

Dennis Cullen Poulin was a 26-year-old from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He served as a Specialist in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment, part of the Massachusetts Army National Guard's 26th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Poulin was wounded by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in the Zabul province of Afghanistan on March 29, 2011. He was evacuated for treatment to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he died from his injuries two days later, on March 31.

Poulin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment was deployed to Afghanistan in late 2010, primarily conducting security and stability operations in the country's volatile south and east.

His death was reported by multiple news outlets in New England. The Massachusetts National Guard stated flags were ordered to fly at half-staff in his honor. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Poulin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. His name is also inscribed on Panel 30W, Row 102 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
