Their Story
Petty Officer First Class Paris Shawn Pough was a 40-year-old sailor from Columbus, Georgia. He served in the United States Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) at the time of his death. The ship was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Pough died on February 17, 2012, in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates. Jebel Ali is a major port and naval facility. The Navy stated his death was not the result of hostile action, but occurred while he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation's primary theater was Afghanistan, but it also included counterterrorism activities in other regions, such as the Philippines and the Horn of Africa. By 2012, the U.S. was in the process of drawing down a surge of forces from Afghanistan.
Pough's death was reported by the Department of Defense in a standard casualty release. He was one of several U.S. service members to die in non-combat incidents in the region during that period. His remains were returned to the United States.
PO1 Pough is memorialized on the Navy Memorial's casualty list for Operation Enduring Freedom. His service is recorded by the U.S. Navy and in the Pentagon's official casualty database.
