Lance Corporal Gregory Alan Posey, a 22-year-old U.S. Marine from Knoxville, Tennessee, was killed in hostile action in Bastion, Afghanistan on July 30, 2009.

Their Story

Gregory Alan Posey was a lance corporal serving with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 as part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, operating in Helmand province.

On July 30, 2009, Posey was killed by hostile fire while conducting combat operations in the vicinity of Camp Bastion, a major British air base in Helmand province. The Department of Defense casualty announcement confirmed his death occurred during combat in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Posey's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in southern Afghanistan. In 2009, U.S. forces, alongside international allies, launched major offensives in Helmand to counter a resurgent Taliban. The conflict was characterized by widespread use of improvised explosive devices and direct engagements.

His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

Lance Corporal Posey is memorialized on the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines memorial at Camp Lejeune and on online veterans' memorials. He was survived by his family, including his parents.
