Jonathan Daniel Porto was a 26-year-old U.S. Marine corporal from Largo, Florida. He was killed in action on March 14, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Corporal Jonathan Daniel Porto was a Marine from Largo, Florida, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was 26 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. According to Marine Corps records, his service also included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
Porto died on March 14, 2010, in the Now Zad district of Helmand province. The Department of Defense stated he was killed while supporting combat operations. The Marine Corps confirmed he was killed in action, though the specific details of the engagement were not publicly detailed in initial reports.
His death occurred during a significant escalation of the war. In late 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered a surge of 30,000 additional troops into Afghanistan, with a focus on clearing Taliban strongholds in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. The 1st Battalion, 6th Marines was heavily engaged in this effort throughout early 2010.
Porto's death was reported by the Tampa Bay Times, which noted he was the second service member from Pinellas County, Florida, to die in Afghanistan within a week. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
He is memorialized on the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines' unit memorial and on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense. His name is included in the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's remembrance of fallen service members.
