Jerry Oreall Pope II was a 35-year-old Ensign in the United States Navy. He was from Tallahassee, Florida, and was serving on active duty, assigned to the Naval Medical Clinic at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
On October 17, 2002, Pope was killed in Sana'a, Yemen. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, he was shot while riding in a vehicle. The Pentagon stated he was on a temporary assignment in Yemen, reportedly supporting security cooperation efforts.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign launched in October 2001. While primarily focused on Afghanistan, the operation included counterterrorism activities in other nations, including Yemen. The Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula network was active in the country at the time.
