Lance Cpl. Timothy James Poole Jr., 22, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on January 24, 2010.
Their Story
Timothy James Poole Jr. was a 22-year-old from Bowling Green, Kentucky. He served as a Lance Corporal with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, of the 3rd Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps.
On January 24, 2010, Poole was killed by hostile fire while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Marine Corps stated he died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. His unit was part of a major coalition offensive, Operation Moshtarak, which began in the province days after his death.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By early 2010, the conflict's focus had shifted to a counterinsurgency strategy, with a significant troop surge deployed to Taliban strongholds in southern Afghanistan, including Helmand.
Poole's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in Bowling Green. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and other service medals.
He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty roster. His death was reported among the 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
