Their Story
Jordan Bradford Pierson was a 2009 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, where he studied behavioral science. He was commissioned as an officer and trained as a C-130J Super Hercules pilot, assigned to the 39th Airlift Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas. In 2015, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
On October 2, 2015, Pierson was killed during a complex Taliban ground assault on Jalalabad Airfield in Nangarhar province. According to U.S. military reports, the attack involved a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated at the base's perimeter, followed by small arms fire. Pierson was one of two U.S. service members killed in the engagement.
Operation Freedom's Sentinel was the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that began on January 1, 2015, following the conclusion of the larger Operation Enduring Freedom. Its stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and to conduct counter-terrorism operations against remnants of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State's affiliate. The mission represented a continued U.S. military presence after the formal end of the NATO combat mission.
Following his death, Pierson's remains were returned to the United States. The Air Force posthumously promoted him from First Lieutenant to the rank of Captain. A memorial service was held at Dyess Air Force Base, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Captain Pierson was remembered by his squadron for his professionalism and dedication. The 39th Airlift Squadron later honored his memory, and his name is inscribed on the Air Force Academy's War Memorial.
