Their Story
Sergeant Linda Lamour Pierre was a 28-year-old soldier from Immokalee, Florida. She served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 101st Special Troops Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, part of the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Her service included deployments to the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan.
On April 16, 2011, Pierre was killed at Forward Operating Base Gamberi in eastern Afghanistan's Laghman Province. According to U.S. military reports, a member of the Afghan National Army turned his weapon on coalition personnel inside the base's command center. The attack killed nine people, including Pierre, four other U.S. soldiers, and four civilian contractors.
Pierre's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a focus on counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces. The incident at FOB Gamberi was one of several 'green-on-blue' attacks involving Afghan forces targeting their international allies.
The attack was widely reported by international news agencies. Pierre and the other American service members killed were returned to the United States. Her death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day of the incident.
Sergeant Pierre is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. Her unit, the 101st Sustainment Brigade, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following the attack.
