U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Brian Francis Piercy, 27, of Clovis, California, died on July 19, 2010, in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Brian Francis Piercy was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was 27 years old and from Clovis, California. According to the Department of Defense, his military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment to Afghanistan.

Piercy was killed on July 19, 2010, in the Arghandab River Valley of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action, reportedly from an improvised explosive device detonated against his unit while on patrol. The Arghandab Valley was a known insurgent stronghold and a focal point of intense combat operations at the time.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major offensive in Kandahar province, including the Arghandab Valley, aimed at clearing Taliban insurgents from key rural districts.

Following his death, Piercy was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg, and he was buried with full military honors at Clovis Cemetery in his hometown.

Piercy is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California State Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His name is included on the 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment's memorial at Fort Bragg.
