U.S. Army Specialist Robert Allan Pierce, 20, of Panama, Oklahoma, was killed in Tsamkani, Afghanistan, on June 3, 2013, while serving with the 506th Infantry Regiment during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Robert Allan Pierce was a 20-year-old soldier from Panama, Oklahoma. He served as a Specialist in Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Pierce died on June 3, 2013, in Tsamkani, Paktia Province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the same engagement.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Security Forces, and insurgent groups, primarily the Taliban. Combat operations in Afghanistan were at a high intensity in 2013, with frequent engagements in eastern provinces like Paktia.
Pierce's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. A memorial service was held at Fort Campbell.
He is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Campbell and within his regiment. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Museum of the American G.I. in Texas, which honors U.S. service members who died in the conflict.
