Their Story
Noah Miles Pier was a 25-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.
Pier was killed on February 16, 2010, in the Nawa district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. At the time, his unit was part of Regimental Combat Team 7, operating under Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan in a region that was a focal point of counterinsurgency efforts.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand. The deployment of additional U.S. forces that year aimed to secure population centers and disrupt Taliban operations.
The Marine Corps confirmed Pier's death in a press release. He was one of at least four U.S. service members reported killed in Afghanistan on that date. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Lance Corporal Pier is remembered on memorial walls and in casualty lists documenting the war. His death contributed to the 2010 annual toll, which was the deadliest year for U.S. forces in the Afghanistan conflict.
