Edward Otis Philpot was a 38-year-old sergeant from Latta, South Carolina. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor Regiment, a South Carolina Army National Guard unit based in Mullins.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Sgt. Philpot died on October 23, 2007, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2007, the conflict was marked by a significant Taliban-led insurgency, with Kandahar province a major center of insurgent activity and frequent IED attacks on coalition forces.

Philpot's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including The State newspaper in South Carolina. He was survived by his wife and children. His funeral was held in Latta with full military honors.

Sgt. Philpot is memorialized on the South Carolina Fallen Heroes Memorial and the National Guard Memorial. His unit, the 263rd Armor Regiment, was later reorganized as part of the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
