Staff Sergeant Anton Ramesh Phillips, 31, of Inglewood, California, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on December 31, 2009.

Their Story

Anton Ramesh Phillips was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to the 5th Maintenance Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, based in Grafenwoehr, Germany. He was from Inglewood, California.

Phillips died on December 31, 2009, in Jalalabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. He was 31 years old.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, the conflict was marked by a surge in U.S. troop levels and a focus on counterinsurgency operations in eastern provinces like Nangarhar.

Phillips was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in California.

He is remembered on memorial walls and in online tributes maintained by veterans' groups. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary.
