Petree, Jaysine Pilar Sucgang
U.S. Army Private First Class Jaysine Pilar Sucgang Petree, 19, of Yigo, Guam, was killed on September 24, 2010, near Combat Outpost Carwile in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jaysine Pilar Sucgang Petree was a 19-year-old soldier from Yigo, Guam. She served as a Private First Class with the 109th Transportation Company, 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. According to the U.S. Army, she had deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On September 24, 2010, Petree was killed near Combat Outpost Carwile in Afghanistan's Zabul province. The Department of Defense stated her death was the result of hostile enemy action. A military report indicated the incident involved an improvised explosive device.
Petree's death occurred during a period of intensified U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. In late 2009, President Barack Obama ordered a troop surge, which increased the number of American forces in the country to approximately 100,000 by mid-2010. The surge aimed to reverse Taliban momentum and improve security conditions ahead of a planned transition to Afghan forces.
Her death was reported by multiple news agencies, including the Associated Press and Stars and Stripes. The Guam Daily Post noted her passing, and she was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
Petree is memorialized on Guam and at Fort Richardson. Her name is inscribed on the Guam Veterans Memorial Wall in Hagåtña and is included in the Alaska Fallen Warrior Memorial.
