Sgt. Jason Darren Peto was a 31-year-old Marine from Vancouver, Washington. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 2.
According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, Peto died on December 7, 2010, at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The Marine Corps stated his death was the result of hostile action, specifically wounds received while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, earlier that year.
Peto's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines was engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations in the Sangin district of Helmand, an area with a high concentration of improvised explosive devices and Taliban fighters.
The Marine Corps announced his death in a press release. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. Peto is listed on the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines' memorial at Camp Pendleton, which honors the unit's significant losses during its 2010-2011 deployment.
