Their Story
Anthony Del Mar Peterson was a 24-year-old sergeant from Chelsea, Oklahoma. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, part of the Oklahoma National Guard's 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Vinita.
On August 4, 2011, Peterson was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Zurmat district of Paktika province, a volatile region in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed his death was the result of hostile action.
Peterson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was marked by a surge of U.S. forces and intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.
Peterson was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in Claremore, Oklahoma, and he was buried at the Chelsea Cemetery. Local news reported that hundreds of community members lined the procession route to pay their respects.
He is remembered on memorials including the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial and the National Infantry Museum's Soldier Walk. His name is inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 93 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.
